This is a site about search engine optimisation (SEO) and website promotion for minnows on the Internet - individuals and small businesses. The emphasis is on optimising your own site and doing it for free, but it is difficult to own a website and not spend any money (at the very least you will probably have to buy a domain name) so some paid options will be mentioned.

This site used to have a home at http://freediyseo.blogspot.com/ but I wanted complete control over the site and wanted to use Wordpress, so here we are at Free DIY SEO.

All the information here is based on my experiences of optimising my own site(s) and my ongoing research into SEO.

I’m Dan Gifford, a Leicester magician and entertainer. I have used SEO techniques to promote my website www.dangifford.com and have had some success - this site is top in the UK for search terms such as ‘Leicester magician‘ and ‘corporate magician‘. But there is always work to do, I need to work on ‘wedding magician‘ as I’m not number 1 yet!

Anyway, most of my business comes through my website.

As I am an entertainer, my approach is from the point of view of using a website to promote a service rather than a product, however most of the techniques are applicable to any website.

Anyone can learn search engine optimisation, but a little bit of a technical/ web background helps. Before I was a magician I was a ‘distance learning developer’ - producing learning materials for students in print and online at De Montfort University, Leicester, UK. And before that I studied chemistry at the University of Leicester, so I have a bit of a technical background.
